Freespill is an open mic and poetry night for everyone — a space for honest expression, connection, and community. Founded and hosted by Newcastle’s own Tahmina Ali, the event champions new and emerging voices, with a particular focus on local talent and lived experience. At its heart, Freespill encourages people to use poetry as a way to speak openly and authentically. As Tahmina puts it: “As long as we aren’t spreading hate, literally anything goes.”

Recognising how intimidating the poetry scene can feel for newcomers, Freespill was created as a welcoming platform for writers and performers at every stage of their journey. Tahmina explains: “Being new to the poetry scene can feel intimidating, especially when it comes to sharing a stage with more experienced performers. Freespill is a space for poets of all levels — the curious, the emerging, the seasoned, and the veterans alike.”

Inclusivity is central to Freespill’s ethos. That’s why the conscious decision was made to host events in alcohol-free venues, helping to create an accessible and comfortable environment for a wider range of communities. In doing so, Freespill hopes to engage audiences who may not typically attend poetry events, while continuing to nurture and expand Newcastle upon Tyne’s vibrant spoken word scene.
